Free Camping on Federal Land: What to Know

Some federal campgrounds are free or first-come, first-served with no reservation fee. Others look free in a write-up but still charge a day-use or dump fee. Treat every “free” flag on this site as a hint from the Recreation.gov text, not a guarantee.

Before you go: open the official Recreation.gov page from the campground listing and read the current fees, stay limits, and fire rules.

What “free” often means

  • No overnight camping fee for a primitive or dispersed site
  • First-come, first-served sites outside the reservation window
  • A campground that is free for camping but still charges for showers or dump use

How to use this site

Filter a state page for Free/no fee, then open each campground and follow the Recreation.gov reservation link. If the official page shows a fee, trust Recreation.gov.

Looking for dump stations while boondocking? Start with the dump station finder and remember coverage is federal-only for now.
